Camp Gray is a Catholic camp and year-round retreat center located on 225 acres between Reedsburg and Wisconsin Dells. The ACA-accredited camp invites people of all ages to experience a fun and vibrant religious community and to deepen their faith in the midst of a beautiful southcentral Wisconsin forested setting.
A new dining facility and gathering place was needed to better serve campers and retreat guests. Listening carefully to understand Camp Gray's mission and programming, ADCI designed a facility that creates the warm, family sense of space desired by the client. Envisioned as the "heart of the camp," the dining hall is a focal point for the camp and its guests. Building on a northwoods camp-theme, designers brought nature into the building through careful selection of finishes and materials. Incorporation of a Catholic identity into the interior and exterior design elements was also important.
The new building consists of two levels. The dining hall with wood-burning fireplace is the first floor feature space, while a private dining room, full-service kitchen, office, storage and various support areas complete the upper level interior layout. Outside, an expansive deck hosts events and activities. The lower level is a walk-out with large patio and grilling area. Inside, guests can cozy up to the Retreat Lounge gas fireplace, visit the camp store and participate in various programs in the activity room, which serves as the camp's storm shelter. Several storage areas, laundry, future offices and other support spaces also occupy the lower level.
